I have had this post about teachers in draft for a while now but today, i am determined to finish and publish it. Its the irony of the life of a teacher that amuses me. How possible it is for the teacher to have knowledge that they disseminate and people who tap from their wealth of knowledge become more exposed, more successful and more famous. I know. We can look at it from many sides, the student was hardworking, the student learnt further....and the argument goes on.
My point is teachers do not necessarily have to be richer that their students but they can be at least comfortable right? The only rich teahers i know about in the part of the world where i can from are teachers that inherited wealth, combine jobs or do other businessess not the ones that got rich from the profession called teaching.
I do not think anybody needs to be educated on the importance of a teacher in ones life. We are all born into this world practically dumb. Everything we know today was from teachers (parents, school teachers, religious scholars, peer group) and research work which we still need teachers to facilitate at some point. Why then do i see the teacher that taught me in my primary school two decades after aged, tired and without a car to at least take him around? Why do my teachers have to go on several months of strike just to ask for a rise in their pay? Why will a teacher ask the class who wants to be a teacher in future and no one raises their hand? Why will a student disrespect or even beat his teacher? Why will parents arrest teachers who discplined their child ( in a moderate manner) because they are influential?
In simple words, lets appreciate our teachers some more, let the profession of teaching move from a pass/part time job to a prestige profession. Let our teachers be honoured, well renumerated, encouraged and cheered on. They hold the key to our future, the future of our children and generation yet unborn. Appreciate a teacher today.
